Send e-mails when changes are detected

If changes in a page are detected, then WebSite-Watcher can send an e-mail to one or more recipients. The setup of that feature consists of two steps:

  1. SMTP Server Setup (Main menu + Options + General + E-mail)

First you have to setup the SMTP server in the general program options.

    1. Click Options in the main menu
    2. Select the menu command Program configuration
    3. Select the Check tab
    4. Click the E-mail button
    5. Enter the server configuration

Enter your SMTP server, the configuration for server authentication and if your SMTP server requires POP-before-SMTP.

The From/To/Subject/Body fields are used for the e-mails which are sent by WebSite-Watcher. If you enter more than one e-mail address to the Recipient field, you have to separate them with a comma or a blank. The Subject and Body fields can contain variables, which will be replaced with real values while sending the e-mails.

    Variables in the subject:

    %name% Name of the bookmark
    %url% Url of the bookmark
%status% Status of the last check
%changes50% First 50 characters of highlighted changes

    Variables in the body:

    %name% Name of the bookmark
    %url% Url of the bookmark
%status% Status of the last check
    %note% Bookmark note
%changes% Highlighted changes in text format

The following screenshot shows a typical configuration. SMTP servers often start with "smtp", "mail" or "email" (for example smpt.domain.com or email.domain.com).

  2. Enable the "Send e-mail" feature in the bookmark properties

The "Send e-mail" feature must be enabled for each bookmark where you want to send an e-mail.

    1. Open bookmark properties
    2. Select the Actions tab
    3. Select Send e-mail on the left side
    4. Enable the Send e-mail feature

E-mails can be sent in HTML or in Text format, for the latter you can optionally attach the downloaded HTML files. For HTML mails the page with highlighted changes is used.

If the Recipient field or the Subject field is entered, then it will be used instead of the appropriate field in the general options. If you enter more than one e-mail address to the Recipient field, you have to separate them with a comma or a blank. The subject field supports the same variables as the configuration in the general program options.
